SURAMAMA is an organization with a deep focus on Empowering Indigenous Mbororo Women and Communities for Sustainable Development
THIS IS WHO WE ARE
In Cameroon like any other part in Africa, there exist several ethnic groups. The Mbororo pastoralist community is one of the indigenous Fulani communities in Cameroon. This is a minority community with a specific cultural background. The mbororo people are located mostly in savannah high lands, even though some are now relocated in town and cities. This is an organization that started like a solidarity group amongst the mbororo people and later on develop to a community Association.
SURA-MAMA meaning grandmothers’ house in Fulfulde language is a Mbororo community development association created and officially recognized by the Government of the Republic of Cameroon in June 2005 as ASSOCIATION DES RESSORTISSANT MBORORO.
SURA-MAMA is engaged in advocating and taking concrete actions for the empowerment of Young girls and women through economic empowerment, leadership as well as field activities. SURA-MAMA has also been suggesting various strategies as well as providing economic opportunities to young girls, promoting education of girls and using mass media to increase the awareness of the whole community about the consequences of early marriage on girls themselves, their family and on the community as a whole. Also engage in empowering women to be part of decision making processes through political participation, environmental protection and human rights.
SURA-MAMA as one of the Indigenous Organizations that effectively represent the interest of Mbororo community – evidence of this by partnering with government ministries, like Ministry for the promotion of women and the family (MINPROFF), Ministry of social Affairs (MINAS) and other Regional networks for Indigenous people to address vital problems faced by Mbororo people.
SURA-MAMA is also affiliated to some regional networks like REPALEAC (The Network of Indigenous and local populations for the sustainable Management of Central African forest Ecosystem), and is assuming the post of the treasury and acting as the focal point organization representing the network in the working group on Biodiversity (GTBAC). GTBAC is a thematic working group on biodiversity for the Commission of central African forest (COMIFAC) countries in Central Africa.
Affiliated to ROSCEVAC (The Civil Society Network for Green Economy in Central Africa) and African Women Leaders Network where SURA-MAMA is responsible for the commission of Youth and Vulnerable persons.

MAIN OBJECTIVE OF SURA-MAMA:
The global objective of Sura-Mama Association is to develop the mbororo community through initiatives orientated towards key areas of focus to ensure full participation in social, economic and sustainable livelihoods for the well-being of mbororo indigenous community. Through the implication of all stakeholders, government, civil society, private sector , local and international NGOs to find sustainable solutions to all vital problems of the mbororo community.
STRUCTURE
Coordinated by a General secretariat made up of President, women Coordinator, Secretary and focal point in 6 regions in Cameroon.
RECENT REALIZATIONS
2024
Environmental protection initiatives through Restoration by planting of cattle friendly grasses in savannah grass field in the west region to fight against the invasive alien species locally called “BUCCASSA” grass.
Land Rights Advocacy campaign for the mbororo indigenous communities in the west region
Biodiversity and health through the ONE HEALTH approach in the Douala Edea protected areas
Indigenous Women and girls empowerment to end gender based violence in the littoral region through advocacy, vocational training and capacity building.
